Programme overview:

Take your reo Māori to an advanced level by continuing your total immersion journey.

Move your fluency to the level of sophistication and eloquence used in karanga and whaikōrero. Learn the subtleties of formal and informal language. Become a bearer of cultural knowledge for your whānau, hapū and iwi as you master our reo rangatira.

When you pass this diploma, you'll get this qualification:

  • New Zealand Diploma in Te Pīnakitanga ki te Reo Kairangi Level 7

You'll learn about:

  • advanced grammar
  • Māori/English and English/Māori translation and interpretation
  • formal and informal language
  • tikanga
  • karanga and whaikōrero

How you'll study:

This is a full-time programme that consists of 120 credits delivered over 40 weeks. Some of our locations offer different delivery modes. These will be confirmed by your local campus and might include:

Option 1

  • 2 x 3 hour kura whakaako (weekly classes)  
  • 6 x 1-day wānanga (8 hours per wānanga) 
  • 2 x noho marae (26 hours per noho) 

Activity directed learning will also need to be completed outside of class time, amounting to approximately:

  • 24.5 hours per week

 

Option 2

  • 1 x 3 hour kura whakaako per week 
  • 8 x noho marae (26 hours per noho) 

 

Activity directed learning will also need to be completed outside of class time, amounting to approximately:

  • 24.5 hours per week

 

Some of the learning activities will need to be completed online. You'll need access to an internet-connected device to complete some learning activities.


Entry criteria:

To enrol in this programme, a potential student must be:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • a New Zealand citizen (or citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands) or permanent resident
  • reside in New Zealand
  • have successfully completed Te Whānautanga o te Reo / Te Aupikitanga ki te Reo Kairangi Level 6, or an equivalent te reo Māori qualification at Level 6
  • meet with a kaiako to discuss course workload and commitment

Or

  • successfully complete the pre-entry assessment (PEA) – direct entries only
  • meet with a kaiako to discuss course workload and commitment

You can take this further by applying to enrol in our master's programme - He Waka Hiringa - Master of Applied Indigenous Knowledge Level 9.

Teach te reo and tikanga Māori. You could also provide leadership and governance in your hapū/iwi entity, or be a cultural advisor in a business or other organisation.


Kōnae Ako (Learning Modules):

Ngā Āhuatanga o te Reo | 15 Credits

Tauira credited with this kōnae ako are able to identify grammatical gaps and apply correct use of a wide range of grammatical structures within te reo Māori.

Whakamāori/Whakapākehā | 15  Credits

Tauira credited with this unit are able to produce accurate translations of selected texts from English to Māori and Māori to English.

Ōpaki/Ōkawa | 15 Credits

Tauira credited with this kōnae ako are able to proficiently apply knowledge of informal and formal language.

Karanga | 15 Credits

Tauira credited with this kōnae ako are able to research and evaluate specific aspects of karanga and analyse the impact of changes overtime on karanga.

Aroā | 15 credits

Tauira credited with this kōnae ako will be able to critically analyse written and spoken text. 

Pūrākau/Pakiwaitara | 15 Credits

Tauira credited with this kōnae ako are able to explain and critically analyse the traditional and continuing role of pūrākau/pakiwaitara as knowledge frameworks. 

Waiata/Haka | 15 Credits

Tauira credited with this kōnae ako are able to apply specialised knowledge through exploration and practice of traditional waiata and haka. 

Whaikōrero | 15 Credits

Tauira credited with this kōnae ako are able to research and evaluate specific aspects of whaikōrero and analyse the impact of changes overtime on whaikōrero.
