Programme overview:

Qualification: NZ Certificate in Tikanga Level 2

If you’re interested in Māori culture and want to learn the stories about who we are as an indigenous people, this programme is the perfect place to start.

Tikanga means customs and protocols - a certain way of doing something. For Māori, tikanga helps us preserve, retain and remember the ways of our ancestors. You’ll cover a broad range of topics from Māori migration and history, through to waiata and haka. You’ll also explore your own lineage and cultural identity.

You'll learn about:

  • basic Māori history
  • basic te reo Māori
  • karakia in accordance with tikanga (protocols)
  • different waiata, and haka
  • working within a group
  • presentation skills and research.

You'll know how to:

  • describe a number of historical events relating to Māori
  • say your pepeha
  • use karakia in accordance with tikanga
  • research topics
  • deliver presentations in a group setting.
