Have you always wanted to work for yourself but don't know where to start? Before you launch your business, learn what many small business owners only figure out once they are in business.

Smart Steps to Business will help you to identify, evaluate and plan for the launch of your business. You'll learn everything required to build a business idea and assess its feasibility alongside launching your business in the market.

Upon successful completion of this programme, you will receive the following qualification:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Business (Introduction to Small Business) (Level 3).

You’ll learn about:

  • external analysis of a business opportunity
  • technology options for small businesses
  • social, cultural and environmental impacts of small businesses
  • effective communication with stakeholders.

You’ll know how to:

  • identify business opportunities
  • assess the feasibility of a small business
  • write a plan for your business
  • identify legislation for a small business.

Enrol in our level 4 small business and project management programme.

You'll be able to go into business for yourself confidently or use your skills in a range of other employment pathways.

How you'll study:

This is a full-time programme that consists of 60 credits delivered over 20 weeks. Throughout the programme you will be required to attend:

  • 1 x 3-hour class per week
  • Workshops - as per delivery schedule (approximately 2 hours per week)
  • 1 x 6-hour wānanga
  • Activity directed learning (10 hours per week)

It is important to note that additional learning (approximately 15 hours per week) will also need to be completed outside of class time.

Workload: For each credit, allow about 10 hours of study. This may be higher at certain times throughout the programme.

In some locations this programme may be provided by way of an approved sub-contract arrangement.
