The carpentry industry offers a lifetime career working locally or overseas. Learn the basic skills and knowledge to begin a new career in building and construction. This entry-level programme will prepare you for an apprenticeship or entry into the construction field.

What is Māori and Pasifika Trades Training?

The key objective of Māori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT) is to increase access for Māori and Pasifika learners to vocational training and pre-employment training. This enables learners to develop the skills for sustainable employment and achieve better employment outcomes.

Who is eligible?

Māori and Pasifika learners aged between 16 to 40 years

How much does it cost?

Eligible tauira can attend this course fees free.

You'll learn about:

  • Health & Safety requirements
  • operating power, portable and hand tools used in the construction process
  • functions of the Building Act, building legislating and compliance
  • building a single level, timber framed, relocatable house as part of a team

You'll know how to:

  • apply Safe Work practices on-site
  • construct sub flooring
  • erect wall & roof framing
  • install exterior cladding
  • install interior lining and finishing

Where will this take me?

I want to keep studying

You’ll be ready to enter an apprenticeship scheme with another training provider. The industry qualfication takes 3-4 years to complete.

I want to use my qualification

There are opportunities for graduates to seek an apprenticeship in carpentry or similar trades within the building industry with construction companies and contractors.

  • be at least 16 years old
  • complete a pre-numeracy and literacy test
