The award-winning Te Wānanga o Aotearoa wellbeing programme Tau Ora has been launched for 2017 and wellbeing advisor Tuihana Ohia says new features this year mean it provides even more benefits for kaimahi taking part.
“We’ll be running new and exciting initiatives throughout the year, starting with a collaboration between Just Bro-Own It and Tau Ora featuring videos on Health and Safety and Vulnerable Children," she says.
"There's also a Tau Ora Kai Series, Tau Ora Korero Paki featuring kaimahi and their thoughts on wellbeing and Tau Ora Rakaunui Kaupapa (Monthly Kaupapa), Tau Ora Rua Tekau (Tau Ora 20) and much more."
Tau Ora registrations are being taken from April 3 to April 13 with the programme for 2017 kicking off on April 18.
“From Monday, April 18 we'll be releasing our Tau Ora Kai Series, featuring Tash ‘n Hera from Te Waenga,” she says. The Tau Ora Kai series uses recipes provided by kaimahi and done in the style of the Delish series featured on Facebook, using both English and Māori kupu
Another new initiative, Tau Ora Rua Tekau, encourages all kaimahi to take 20 minutes a day to focus on their wellbeing through their choice of activity. Also there are other challenges for those wanting to take a varied approach to wellbeing and providing another option for kaimahi who may not be so physically active.
Tau Ora has helped those taking part double the amount of exercise they do each day and burn, on average, an extra 750 calories each. Three-quarters of whānau who completed the Tau Ora survey reported increased enjoyment of life as a result of the programme. Two-thirds said their concentration had improved and they found increased fulfilment in their work. Alongside this, more than half reported better quality of sleep and increased confidence and self-esteem.
Tau Ora was launched in 2009 and has been hugely successful with 50 percent of wānanga kaimahi taking part in the initiative. It is based on the idea of team members supporting each other to overcome challenges and achieve their personal wellbeing goals.
The programme has won a swag of awards, including the Waipa District Excellence in Workplace Wellness award, the Global Corporate Challenge Most Active Organisation award, placing first equal in the 2013 NZ Workplace Wellness award, taking out the Workplace Wellness and the Supreme Award at the NZ Health and Safety Awards and in 2017 were won awards at both the HRINZ and Diversity Awards.
