Programme overview:

Start your artistic journey at a safe and easy beginner’s level with Kāwai Raupapa. This programme enhances your knowledge of Māori art forms.

With the help of our experienced kaiako, you can use this programme to:

  • undertake a community or marae project
  • kick-start your tertiary studies
  • develop a portfolio of work for entry into higher level arts programmes
  • start a process of personal exploration, healing, and growth.

You'll learn about:

  • a specific kaupapa dependent on kaiako and delivery site
  • exploring story through myths, legends, whakataukī, and waiata
  • basic research and fact finding skills
  • identity and whakapapa
  • hands-on processes.

You'll know how to:

  • try new experiences and take part in cultural activities
  • begin to explore ideas through specific kaupapa
  • begin to recognise and respect the cultural aspects and practices
  • begin to explore your own whakapapa.

You may be eligible to enrol in a Level 4 Toi programme.

I want to use my qualification
You can continue to develop your skills in this kaupapa by contributing to your whānau, community, or marae.

How you'll study:

This is a full-time programme. You need to be committed to (on average):

  • noho marae 
  • tutorials and working in groups
  • extra study and activities that you decide will help your learning. (These may differ from class-to-class.)

In some locations this programme may be provided by way of an approved sub-contract arrangement.
