He taonga tuku iho o Ngāi Tamarāwaho
A cultural treasure
Our Tauranga campus carries the name Tukarere, gifted by Ngāi Tamarāwaho. The name recalls Taurikura, a puhikura, a tipua, whose journey is remembered in the patere Taurikura written by her mokopuna in 1979.
That patere traces her path across the whenua, through valleys and rivers, and finally to Karewa Island. Tukarere remembers both her fleeting rest and her departure, as well as the abundance once found from the mountains to the sea.
Today, our campus stands as a place of growth and renewal, where the spirit of Tukarere continues. Just as the journey of Taurikura was one of challenge and resilience, our tauira are supported here to reflect, strive, and grow in their learning.
