What does it all mean?
At Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, there are different ways you can study. If you’re not sure what to expect, that’s okay. We’re here to help you get prepared.
There are four main study formats:
Some programmes use more than one study format.
Your main study format will be shown on the programme page and on the application form.
For example:
Your main study format might be classroom learning, where you attend classes regularly.
Your programme might also include one or two noho experiences as part of your learning journey.
Learning online
Whether you’re confident, curious, or just starting out we’re here to help you thrive in your online learning journey.
Learning online or e-Learning is learning that takes place using digital tools like a computer or laptop. For some programmes this can include live Zoom sessions with your kaiako and other tauira. You’ll be part of a real-time, interactive learning space online.

Tips for online success
Noho or Noho Marae
Noho is an focused learning experience that often takes place over a weekend. This may occur on campus or at another location such as a marae. If it is held on a marae, its often referred to as a noho marae.

Classroom learning
Classroom learning at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa is a face-to-face learning experience where tauira come together regularly to learn with their kaiako and each other.
Classes are held at a campus or community location and follow a set timetable. Learning is guided by your kaiako and supported by discussion, shared activities, and practical learning where appropriate. Classroom learning values whakawhanaungatanga, learning together, and drawing on the knowledge and experiences everyone brings into the room.
This study format suits tauira who enjoy learning alongside others, benefit from regular structure, and value direct support and guidance throughout their learning journey.

Home-based learning (HBL)
Home-based learning at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa allows tauira to study in their own space and time, to fit around work, whānau, and other commitments.
Learning materials are provided for you to work through independently, with guidance and support from your kaitiaki.
While you are not required to attend regular classroom sessions, you are still supported throughout your learning journey and are expected to stay engaged and keep up with your study.
This study format suits tauira who are self-motivated, need flexibility, or are unable to attend classes in person, but still want a structured and supported learning experience.
