Our local story
For many years, this campus was simply known as 'the bus stop.' When mana whenua wanted a name that carried the dignity and whakapapa of this place, Whakatōhea kaumātua and kuia came together for a hui held at Ōmarumutu Marae and gifted the name, Pākihikura.
This name connects to the Ōpōtiki harbour entrance, to the waka Pākihikura and the tūpuna who travelled inland to settle at Whakapaupākihi, and to other places in the rohe that share the name – including the Pākihi Valley and the river mouth where the Ōtara and Waioweka rivers flow to the sea.
Today, the campus carries the name with pride.
Pākihikura honours the vision of mana whenua and the journeys of tūpuna, while opening new pathways of learning and success for tauira and their whānau.
