Our local story
Te Wānanga o Aotearoa has had a permanent presence in Palmerston North since 1999, delivering programmes across different sites in the city.
In 2012, we left Botanical Road and relocated to Massey University’s Hokowhitu campus. That site has since been renamed Centennial Park, and it remains a special place for our tauira and kaimahi.
Centennial Park is unique because it encompasses Te Kupenga o te Mātauranga (Te Haonui Marae). When we moved here, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa was entrusted with the privilege of guardianship of this marae - the first marae established on a tertiary institution in Aotearoa.
The marae is the heart of the campus. Each weekday morning begins with karakia at 8.45am, bringing tauira, kaimahi, and manuhiri together to ground the day in mātauranga Māori. This daily practice makes Centennial Park not just a place of learning, but a living wharenui of cultural connection and whānau transformation.
Today, we deliver programmes from three main spaces: Te Kupenga o te Mātauranga me Te Haonui (the marae complex), Mataamua, and the Facilities Workshop.
