Te kōrero o Te Kura o te Toroa
A place for you
Te Kura o te Toroa was the name gifted to our Kawerau campus by Ngāti Tūwharetoa ki Kawerau.
It recalls a rare gathering of toroa (albatross) near Maungawhakamana. These birds came from all directions, each carrying pōhutukawa seeds in their beaks. They placed the pōhutukawa seeds into the cliff face near the Tarawera Falls, where they took root and, in season, burst into red bloom.
Kaumātua liken this to our hāpori (community). The seeds are mātauranga (knowledge) and the flowering represents the growth of our tauira and community as we learn together.
As you learn with us, your journey is grounded in tikanga Māori and carried forward with the strength, unity, and endurance of the toroa.
