What are programme fees?

Programme fees are the costs you might need to pay when you enrol in a programme.

Many of our programmes have no fees. Where programme fees apply, we keep these as low as possible and are committed to making study affordable for our tauira and their whānau.

To support the long-term sustainability of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and ensure we can continue transforming whānau through education for generations to come, fees have been introduced for additional programmes from Semester A 2027.

If you enrol in a programme that has fees, it's important to know that you're responsible for paying them. By completing your enrolment, you’re agreeing to our Payment Terms and Conditions.

How can I pay my fees?

There are a few ways you can pay your programme fee. You’ll be asked to select the option that works best for you when you complete your enrolment.

Please choose carefully, as you won’t be able to change your payment option after submitting your enrolment application.

Once your enrolment has been confirmed, we’ll provide you with more information on how to pay your fees.

Pay your fee in full

You can pay your fee directly into our bank account. Once your enrolment has been confirmed, we will send you the payment instructions and bank account details.

You can also pay online by credit card.

Please have your invoice handy, as you'll need to enter the invoice number and your tauira ID number to pay.

Pay by instalments

You can pay your fee in 8 equal fortnightly instalments.

These payments will start 14 days after your programme begins. You'll receive detailed payment instructions from us.

Apply for a Student Loan

You may be able to pay your fee through a StudyLink Student Loan.

StudyLink recommends applying as early as possible to help get your correct payments on time.

Financial support for tauira

We know that money can be a barrier to study. Support is available to help you get started.

Tauira Access Fund

This fund helps remove financial barriers that may prevent tauira from starting or continuing their studies. The fund provides support towards programme fees for tauira experiencing financial circumstances that may affect their ability to participate in learning.

We recognise that financial circumstances affect people in different ways, and that asking for support can sometimes feel difficult. Inati Tahua is designed to provide fair and equitable support to eligible tauira so more people can access education and succeed in their learning journey.

There are a range of external scholarships available through government agencies, iwi, trusts, and community organisations that may help with your study costs.

If you receive a scholarship, financial assistance, such as an Inati Tahua| Tauira Access Fund grant, or are eligible for other government funding, such as StudyLink, we will let you know if there are any outstanding fees after your enrolment has been confirmed.

Early withdrawals and refunds

If you decide to withdraw from your programme, you might be able to receive a refund, but only if you withdraw before the early withdrawal cut-off date.

This date depends on the length of your programme and is usually between 10 and 26 working days after your programme starts.

After the cut-off date:

You won’t receive a refund
You'll still need to pay any outstanding fees
Your withdrawal will be recorded on your academic record and NZQA Record of Learning

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my programme has fees?

From Semester A 2027, fees will apply to:

All programmes at Level 5 and above and some programmes at Levels 3 and 4
Programmes that already have fees in place.

Visit our programmes page to find out whether fees apply to the programme you are interested in.

Mātauranga Māori programmes at Level 4 and below, including te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and toi Māori programmes, will remain fees-free.

When are fees due?

If you have chosen to pay your programme fee in full (or through StudyLink): Payment must be made within 30 days of your programme start date.

If you have chosen to pay your programme fee by instalments: Your first payment is due 14 days after your programme start date, with the remaining 7 payments due every 14 days until all 8 instalments have been paid.

What if I can’t pay my fees?

What happens if I don't pay my fees?

Talk to us early if you're having difficulty. If your fees remain unpaid, recovery steps will be taken:

15-90 days overdue: Overdue fees notices issued (depending on the payment option selected)
91-99 days: Debt collection process begins
100+ days: Debt with collection agency

Unpaid fees may be referred to a collection agency and could impact your ability to study or graduate.

Does studying impact my benefit?

Should I apply for StudyLink if I am considering more study later?

StudyLink support is subject to lifetime limits. Generally, StudyLink will provide Student Loans for up to 7 EFTS (Equivalent Full-Time Student) of study. This is approximately 7 to 8 years of full-time study. Any Student Loan used for fees, living costs, or course-related costs contributes towards this limit.

If you’re considering further study in the future, it may be worthwhile understanding how much of your Student Loan or Student Allowance entitlement you have already used. StudyLink can provide information specific to your situation.
