Tauira Pre-entry Assessment
Overview
The pre-entry assessment helps us check whether the programme you’ve applied for is the right starting point for your current te reo Māori knowledge and skills.
You’ll need to complete a pre-entry assessment if you’re applying for one of our new te reo Māori programmes at Levels 3 to 7 delivered through classroom or noho learning.
Levels 1 and 2 do not have a pre-entry assessment. Our new Level 4 programme will be available from Semester B 2027, with applications opening closer to the time.
If you need help accessing the assessment or have had a technical problem while completing the assessment, please contact us and we’ll connect you with the right support.
Completing the online pre-entry assessment
Levels 3 to 5 have one online pre-entry assessment.
Levels 6 and 7 if you meet the required result, you may also need to complete an oral pre-entry assessment.
Once we’ve processed your application and completed the initial eligibility checks, we’ll email you instructions for accessing and completing your assessment. If you’ve applied for Level 6 or 7, these instructions will be communicated to relevant tauira as they progress through the enrolment journey.
Make sure you’re ready before you start, as you can only attempt the assessment once and your result will help determine the right starting point for you.
12 questions to answer honestly about your current reo Māori knowledge.
30 minutes from the time you start.
6 correct answers to meet the online pre-entry assessment requirement.
1 attempt at the assessment, completed in 1 sitting.
Complete the assessment yourself. You can use a dictionary, but you must not get help from other people or use AI tools.
Not supervised. You complete the assessment online in your own space.
For the best experience, use a computer or tablet with a reliable internet connection.
If you experience a technical problem while completing the assessment, contact us and let us know what happened before trying again.
If you have studied te reo Māori before
Previous study does not automatically replace the pre-entry assessment.
If you’ve studied te reo Māori before, you’ll still need to complete the relevant pre-entry assessment unless you are eligible to progress through the new suite of te reo Māori programmes without completing another assessment.
Online pre-entry assessment results and next steps
After you finish, we’ll let you know your outcome and what you need to do next. You'll be able to see your score by selecting the view results button at the end of the assessment. You will also receive an email with your results and next steps.
What happens next depends on your result and the level you’re applying for:
Levels 3 to 5: If you meet the required result, you have completed the online pre-entry assessment requirement
Levels 6 and 7: If you meet the required result, you’ll also need to complete an oral pre-entry assessment
If another level is a better fit: We’ll recommend an appropriate reo Māori programme and guide you through your next step.
Before your enrolment is confirmed: You’ll still need to meet the programme eligibility, entry and class requirements.
Completing the pre-entry assessment does not confirm your enrolment. You’ll still need to meet the other eligibility, programme and class requirements before your enrolment is confirmed.
Oral pre-entry assessment for Levels 6 and 7
If you’re applying for Level 6 or Level 7, you’ll complete the online pre-entry assessment first.
Depending on the assessment process that applies to you, you may also need to complete an oral pre-entry assessment. We’ll email you with instructions for each step when it’s time to complete it. More information about the Level 6 and 7 assessment process will be communicated to relevant tauira as they progress through the enrolment journey.
