Maunga Kura Toi (Raranga) offers you the opportunity to achieve a degree-level understanding of weaving, tikanga, and toi Māori. This programme is a modern acknowledgment of traditional knowledge and strength - an academic and creative pathway for those committed to becoming a kaitiaki of the weaving traditions handed down by our tūpuna.

Guided by expert kaiako and kaupapa wānanga, you’ll explore mātauranga Māori, design, and storytelling through fibre, enriching your own creative voice and that of your whānau and community.

Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skill in raranga within kaupapa Māori contexts
Apply mātauranga Māori, tikanga, and kaupapa wānanga principles to your practice
Conduct and apply rangahau to inform design, storytelling, and creative outcomes
Critically analyse traditional and contemporary weaving methods and theories
Create, exhibit, and reflect on an advanced body of work in raranga
Contribute leadership and cultural knowledge within community and creative settings

Deepen your mātauranga Māori relating to raranga and apply it directly to your creative practice
Use te reo Māori and tikanga in your smahi toi
Develop and refine your own creative processes through weaving projects
Carry out rangahau and strengthen your writing and presentation skills to support your raranga practice
Engage in reflective practice – analysing, critiquing and synthesising ideas to shape your direction as a weaving practitioner

Entry criteria
You can enrol if you:
Are at least 16 years of age
A New Zealand citizen or resident (or citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue or the Cook Islands)
Reside in New Zealand
Attend an interview
Provide evidence of your readiness to study at a degree level. This might be through:
NCEA Level 2
a Level 4 arts qualification of 120 credits
a creative portfolio and CV detailing your experience
Graduates of Toi Paematua: Diploma in Māori and Indigenous Art (Level 5) can pathway directly into year two of the degree.
