In this programme, you’ll refine your technical weaving abilities, expand your knowledge of tikanga and fibre preparation, and explore the creative processes behind traditional and contemporary raranga.

Gain experience in the full weaving process – from harvesting harakeke and preparing fibres, to designing and completing woven pieces
Refine your creative processes as you explore new ways to make work
Plan and manage weaving projects from first idea to finished taonga

Explore how values and beliefs are expressed through weaving and reflect on your own as a weaver
Connect and collaborate with other toi practitioners
Carry out rangahau into the history, tikanga and cultural practices of Ngā Mahi ā Te Whare Pora

Where will this take me?
On completion, you'll have the skills to:
Keep studying
Progress into Maunga Kura Toi: Bachelor of Māori Art (Raranga) or other degree-level study in visual arts or Māori art.
Use at work
Work as a practising weaver, artist, or cultural practitioner supporting toi Māori and heritage projects.
Community involvement
Share your weaving knowledge with whānau, hapū, iwi, or community kaupapa to help preserve and revitalise Ngā Mahi ā te Whare Pora.

Entry criteria
You can enrol if you:
Are 16 years or older
Are a NZ citizen or resident (includes Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau) or Australian citizen/permanent resident
Currently reside in New Zealand
Attend an interview with the kaiako
Have successfully completed Kāwai Raupapa: Certificate in Māori and Indigenous Art (Level 4) or an equivalent qualification, or provide a portfolio showing relevant creative experience
