Work Readiness Building and Construction

• 4 x 6-hour classes each week

Your structured class and group times include: 

• Face-to-face with your kaiako or other presenters 

• Revision, and assessment activities 

Plan for around 8 hours of study in your own time each week.

Tasks and activities you’ll complete outside of class include: 

• Working through programme resources (such as workbooks, audio, video, or online activities) 

• Completing aromatawai (assessments)

• Required reading 

• Practising your new skills

• Doing research, reflection, or group study

You’ll need to have access to a: 

• Computer or laptop 

• Reliable internet connection  

The aim of this kōnae ako is for you to participate in a range of activities to support your (re)-introduction and familiarisation with te ao Māori, to introduce you to health and safety legislation and safe working practices. There is also a focus on understanding human risk factors and traffic law to support you in gaining a driver’s licence.

You'll become familiar with the safe use of hand and power tools, and to be able to read and interpret project plans in a building, construction, and allied trade skills (BCATS) environment.

You'll continue to apply safe practices relating to hand and power tools, as well as fixed machinery to carry out projects and to gain knowledge of construction materials within a BCATS environment.
