Introduction to Team Leadership in Business

• 1 x 3-hour online class per week

• Online workshops (average of 2 hours per week)

• 1 x 6-hour one-day online wānanga

 Your structured class and group times include: 

• Online video sessions (live) with your kaiako or other presenters 

• Wānanga or online tutorials

• Practice, revision, and assessment activities

Dates, online platforms and other details will be confirmed by your kaiako.

Plan for around 22 hours of study in your own time each week.

Tasks and activities you’ll complete outside of class include: 

• Working through programme resources (such as workbooks, audio, video, or online activities) 

• Completing aromatawai (assessments) and required reading 

• Practising your new skills

• Doing research, reflection, or group study

You’ll need to have access to: 

• A computer or laptop 

• A reliable internet connection

You’ll describe and compare different team leadership styles, including Māori leadership principles and practices. You’ll use personality tools to identify your own style and evaluate how effective it is in a real or realistic business context, alongside other styles. You’ll also examine how diverse teams operate and how different leadership approaches support diversity.

You’ll identify the principles that contribute to effective team performance and apply them in a holistic business context. You’ll explore what makes teams functional or dysfunctional, consider motivational models (e.g. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs), and understand legal requirements and internal policies for managing team members. You’ll practise effective oral and written communication with stakeholders and build skills to contribute confidently to a team.

The main skills you’ll develop are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely (SMART) objectives so your team can achieve a clear outcome. You’ll organise team objectives using problem-solving and decision-making techniques, while demonstrating professional, ethical, socially, and culturally appropriate behaviour throughout.
